Some recommendations for controlling wood-eating moth pest in pistachio orchards

According to the coordination made by the Public Relations of the Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection, Dr. Hadi Zohdi, a faculty member of the Plant Protection Department of the Kerman Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and education Center, gave an interview to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) on Monday, April 5th entitled, "Some recommendations for controlling wood-eating moth pest in pistachio orchards" in the following link:

In this interview with ISNA, he stated that the pistachio wood-eating moth attacks pistachio trees at the beginning of spring and causes the fall of pistachio clusters. The larvae located in the core of the branches cause the weakness of the branches and as a result the weakness of the fruit buds and leaves and cause a lot of damage to the pistachio trees.

He continued: "This pest has only one generation per year and spends most of its life in the larval stage and in the core of the branches. Determination of the proper timing of the control against some pistachio pests, including wood-eating moths and weevils, is extremely important. Because over time, the pest enters a stage or a place that is not affected by pesticides and the success rate of chemical control is greatly reduced. One of the oldest methods is to study the life stages of the pest in a few years and to determine the peak flight time of the moth to determine the proper timing to control this pest. For this purpose, one or two pheromone traps should be installed in the garden from the end of March, and the peak of the pest flight should be determined by counting the number of male moths on a daily basis, then chemical control with the recommended pesticides can be done. Registered and recommended pesticides for this pest include thiodicarp, lofenrone, lofenrone and phenoxycarp and hexaflumuron. Another way to control this pest is to use forecasts and meteorological data, which are announced by experts based on the peak flight time.
